2 · Where the HKD ~22k delta goes
Buyers often assume the price difference is "margin." It isn't (or isn't most of it). Where the gap actually goes:
| Cost component | Approximate HKD delta |
|---|---|
| Italian Sedac-Meral mechanism vs unbranded | +5,000 |
| HK custom cabinetry vs European off-shelf import | +8,000 |
| Free 60-min structural pre-assessment labour | +1,500 |
| HK 4-panel flat-pack lift logistics | +2,000 |
| 5-year warranty + annual re-tension visit | +3,000 |
| HK General Liability + Workmen's Comp insurance pro-rata | +1,000 |
| Net (margin equivalent across both tiers) | +1,500-2,500 |
| Total delta | HKD ~22,000-23,000 |
Margin sits roughly equivalent across both tiers — the cost stack just contains different inputs.
3 · Where Spazio Plus is the right answer
- 1-2 year rental: install pays back over 5+ years; for short-term tenancy, the entry tier wins on absolute cost
- Guest room used <15 nights/year: you don't need a 15-year mechanism; basic spring lasts long enough
- Flexible on cabinet finish: off-shelf European cabinets are well-designed; if their finishes work for you, paying 2× for HK custom is unnecessary
- You can DIY structural verification: if you understand load math + can probe walls yourself, the structural pre-assessment isn't a value-add for you
- Tight budget priority: HKD 17k vs HKD 38k is a HKD 21k gap that buys 5 years of rent contribution toward a flat down-payment
4 · Where we're genuinely better
- You're keeping the bed 10+ years: Italian mechanism outlasts the cheaper alternative by ~7 years; total cost of ownership over 15 years favours us
- HK 1968-era walk-up: 4-panel flat-pack + structural assessment matters when lifts are 1.4×1.2m + partition material is unknown
- You want a specific timber + finish: off-shelf can't do "natural ash with brass inlay matching client's existing kitchen cabinets" — custom does
- Daily use cycle (e.g. WFH office by day, bed by night): 365 deploy cycles/year × 7 years = 2,555 cycles; basic spring deteriorates noticeably; gas-strut rated 50,000 cycles unaffected
- HK family with new baby / P1 / multi-gen hosting: wall bed cabinet quality matters when guest comfort matters
- Bank-legal corporate-let lease: our freestanding variant has been audited + approved; we don't know if Spazio Plus has equivalent
5 · The real test — do this before committing to either
- Get 3 quotes: Spazio Plus + us + 1 mid-market vendor (Murphy Wallbed HK or similar). Compare line-by-line.
- Visit each showroom in person: photos hide cabinet quality. Open + close mechanism 5×. Tap cabinet for hollow sound. Feel finish edge for sharpness vs rounding.
- Ask each vendor: "What's the mechanism brand?" If they can't name it, walk away from THAT vendor (regardless of tier). Generic mechanisms sold at named-mechanism prices is the #1 HK red flag.
- Ask each: "Will you do a structural pre-assessment before quoting?" If no, walk away — they'll install on whatever's there + plumbing damage is your problem.
- Read each contract before deposit: our public template at /contract-template.html. Compare what others offer.
6 · Honest bottom line
Spazio Plus and Wallbed by Design serve different buyer profiles. The biggest mistake HK shoppers make is treating both as "wall bed vendors" without understanding they're different products at different price-points. If you do the 5 steps above, you'll know which fits your situation.
If your situation fits Spazio Plus, buy from Spazio Plus. We'll tell you that directly during consultation if it's true.
