Wall Bed Mounting — Will Your HK Wall Hold It?
Published 2026-05-17 · Wallbed by Design 牆床·度身設計
"Can my wall actually take a wall bed?" is the most common HK install-feasibility question we get. Worth a clear answer: concrete walls yes, partition walls usually yes with planning, HOS units yes with rule-awareness. Here's the honest breakdown.
How much weight a wall bed actually pulls on the wall
At full extension — mattress + bedding + person climbing in — the dynamic peak load on the mount points reaches 750kg. The American SBLM mechanism we use distributes this across 6-8 anchor points (not 2-4 like some cheaper Murphy beds). Static load (folded up against the wall) is roughly half that.
For comparison: a typical kitchen wall cabinet pulls 30-80kg per anchor. A flat-screen TV bracket pulls 50-150kg. A wall bed pulls 90-130kg per anchor — heavier but well within structural wall capacity, and within reinforced partition wall capacity.
Wall type 1: Concrete structural wall (the easy case)
Most HK flats have at least one concrete structural wall. These are the demising walls between flats, exterior walls, and bathroom partition walls. Concrete 100mm or thicker handles wall-bed mounts with appropriate chemical anchors (Hilti HVA, Fischer FIS V, etc.). No reinforcement needed.
How to identify a concrete wall
- Tap test: solid, dull thud (vs hollow ring for partition)
- Nail test: a small finishing nail won't go in without significant force, and if it does, it stops within 1-2 cm
- Drill test (small bit, 6mm): white-grey dust = concrete; pink dust = brick (rare in HK); white powder = drywall (partition)
- Check flat plans (search "
floor plan" online — most HK developers publish them)
If you have a concrete wall available, we mount on it. Install time: 1 day. No additional cost beyond the standard wall-bed fee.
Wall type 2: Partition wall (the case-by-case)
Many HK newer builds use partition walls (drywall on metal stud) for internal divisions. These are NOT load-bearing — they hold pictures and small shelves fine, but raw drywall can't take a wall-bed mount. They CAN, however, work with reinforcement.
Backing plate method (most common)
We open the drywall along the planned mount line, install a horizontal steel backing plate spanning 3-4 metal studs, then reseal the drywall. The wall-bed bracket bolts through the new drywall into the steel plate. Looks identical to before after install. Cost add-on: HKD 3,000-6,000 typically.
Stud-only mounting (sometimes works)
If the partition wall has 50-75mm metal studs at 400-600mm spacing AND the bracket pattern matches studs in 4+ positions, we can mount directly into studs with toggle bolts + heavy-duty anchors. Works for single beds in some cases. Stress-tested before sign-off. NOT recommended for queen or double-sized beds on stud-only mounts.
When partition walls fail
If the partition is older drywall on wood stud (rare in HK new builds, common in old subdivided flats), or the stud spacing is irregular, or the wall is curved/bent — we recommend reinforcement or alternative wall. We don't install on walls we can't certify.
Wall type 3: HOS (居屋) units — specific rules
HOS rules permit wall-mounted furniture on internal non-structural walls. You can install a wall bed; you cannot make structural alterations or alter load-bearing walls. The key rules:
- Yes — mount on internal partition or non-structural walls (most HOS bedrooms have these)
- Yes — mount on internal concrete walls IF they're not load-bearing (rare in HOS internal layout)
- No — alter exterior walls, demising walls, structural columns or beams
- No — drill through the slab (don't try to ceiling-anchor in HOS)
- No — make permanent modifications that require Housing Authority approval (HA notice required for non-trivial works)
In practice: 90% of HK HOS bedroom layouts have a wall suitable for a wall-bed install without any HA notice. We've installed in 30+ HOS units. See our HOS-specific guide for the full rule context.
When no suitable wall exists — 3 workarounds
- Reinforce a partition with a backing plate — HKD 3,000-6,000 add-on, 1-day install. The most common solution.
- Freestanding wall-bed cabinet system — no wall mount required; the bed mechanism is housed in a self-supporting cabinet that you secure (not anchor) to the wall. Higher cost (HKD 12,000-20,000 over standard install) but fully reversible. Best for rental flats.
- Switch wall — sometimes the "obvious" wall (e.g. the one facing the window) isn't the best. We often find that an adjacent suitable wall works fine after re-planning the room. Free consultation includes 2-3 wall options.
Our free in-home wall check
Before any quote, we do a free in-home wall check (30-45 min):
- Tap-and-listen tests on candidate walls
- Test drilling (small hole, patches free) where uncertain
- Photographs + measurements for our records
- 3 written wall options ranked by feasibility, cost, install time
- Any reinforcement add-on costs flagged explicitly
- Honest "no" if no wall in the flat can take a wall bed safely (rare, but we say it)
